Founded by Michael New OBE, the inaugural conference was held in Bangkok in 1980. Subsequent conferences took place in India (2003 and 2011), with the Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM) Program of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) organizing the 2017 and 2023 editions in Bangkok, Thailand, as well as the 2019 conference at Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), China.
GIANT PRAWN 2025 is the 7th Conference in the series. It is jointly organized by AIT, Thailand, and SHOU, China, in collaboration with the Zhejiang Institute of Freshwater Fisheries (ZIFF) and Huzhou University, China.
